(Patria) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not rule out US support for a potential regime change in Cuba, stating that President Donald Trump's administration wants a change of power in the country.
When asked during a Senate hearing on Venezuela if he would rule out regime change in Cuba, Rubio replied:
"Oh, no. I think we would like to see a regime change there. That doesn't mean we will make a change, but we would like to see a change.
There is no doubt that it would be very beneficial for the United States to no longer be under the rule of an autocratic regime."
His statements come amid increased scrutiny of the Trump administration's actions in the Western Hemisphere, following a US military operation in Venezuela on January 3rd.
Recall that this operation resulted in the capture and removal of the country's president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Celia Flores, who were transported to New York after a night raid on their home in Caracas.
Rubio defended the administration's actions regarding the operation in Venezuela and emphasized that no further use of military force is currently expected.
