Rubio announced reorganization of the State Department

(Patria) - The administration of US President Donald Trump is reorganizing the State Department to eliminate some offices it deems unnecessary, as well as programs that are not aligned with American interests, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced yesterday.

"This approach will strengthen the State Department from the ground up, from offices to embassies. Region-specific functions will be consolidated to increase functionality.

Redundant offices will be eliminated, and non-statutory programs that are not aligned with America's core national interests will cease to exist," Rubio stated.

He described the changes as part of President Trump's "America First" agenda.

Rubio criticized the growth of departments over the years, calling them bloated, bureaucratic, and incapable of performing their core diplomatic mission in this new era of great power competition.

The extensive reorganization comes after Trump ordered a review of the US foreign service in February to ensure it follows his foreign policy agenda.

US officials said in March that the department was also preparing to close a dozen consulates. Marco Rubio's statement did not specify whether any consulates would be closed.
