(Patria) - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the move by German intelligence services to classify the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a right-wing extremist organization and called on Germany to change course.
"Germany just gave its spy agency new powers to surveil the opposition. That’s not democracy—it’s tyranny in disguise.
What is truly extremist is not the popular AfD—which took second in the recent election—but rather the establishment’s deadly open border immigration policies that the AfD opposes," Rubio wrote on social media platform X.
He added that Germany should change course.

The German intelligence agency yesterday declared the anti-immigrant AfD party a confirmed right-wing extremist organization that does not respect human dignity and poses a threat to democracy.
The new classification, which gives the agency broader surveillance powers over the AfD, is the result of a comprehensive review whose findings were presented in an internal 1,100-page report.
This comes just days before Germany's new government, led by conservatives, is set to take office under future Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
