Republican primaries: Trump defeats Haley in South Carolina

(Patria) - Donald Trump easily defeated Nikki Haley in the Republican contest in South Carolina, Reuters reported, citing exit polls.

Trump was widely favored to win, and polls showed he had a significant lead despite a series of criminal indictments and the fact that Haley is a native of South Carolina, where she served two terms as governor.

This outcome will intensify calls from Trump's allies for Haley, the last remaining Trump opponent, to drop out of the race. Trump has dominated all five contests so far - in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and now in Haley's home state - leaving her with virtually no chance for the Republican nomination.

Defiant Haley, who served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under Trump, insisted this week that she would continue her campaign at least until "Super Tuesday" on March 5, when Republicans in fifteen states and one U.S. territory will vote.
