(Patria) - House Republicans declared the first day of the impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden a success, saying they had made their case, BBC reports.
But, the experts called by the Republicans warned that there is still not enough evidence for impeachment. The hearing was dominated by the business dealings of President Biden's son, Hunter, whom Republicans claim was "selling" his father's influence.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced an official impeachment inquiry in early September to investigate allegations that Hunter Biden was involved in improper business dealings that benefited the President.
The official inquiry has given lawmakers greater legal authority to investigate potential misconduct, after months of Republican investigations failed to uncover concrete evidence.
At the first hearing in the inquiry, Hunter Biden was the main topic for Republicans.
Republican James Comer of Kentucky said the committee would examine more than "two dozen pieces of evidence," including emails and bank records, which he said would reveal "Joe Biden's corruption and abuse of public office."
President Biden has previously said he has "never" discussed business with his son. The investigation will focus on whether Biden took any action to directly assist his family members' businesses, including meeting with their clients.
At the hearing held, there were no witnesses with direct knowledge of the two Bidens. Instead, the committee heard from experts in tax law, criminal investigations, and constitutional law theory. The impeachment inquiry is expected to last several weeks. It is too early to say whether congressional investigators will seek a House impeachment vote after holding hearings.
