(Patria) - Republicans and Democrats have jointly drafted a bill presented yesterday in the U.S. House of Representatives, which would require the (vice)president to publicly disclose their tax returns before, during, and after their tenure in the White House.
The bill was crafted by an unusual pair - conservative Republican Representative James Comer and very liberal Democratic Representative Katie Porter, with the aim of strengthening oversight of presidential ethics.
All this is happening in an election year when Congress is conducting investigations into the presumed presidential candidates of both parties, and also seeks to curb foreign influence on American politics.
Two days ago, Democrats introduced a rival bill that strengthens the constitutional ban on the U.S. president accepting gifts and money from foreign nationals without special congressional approval, given that Donald Trump, the presumed Republican candidate, while president, brazenly ignored the Constitution when foreign officials visited his hotels and other properties he owns.
These two legislative proposals indicate that both parties have an appetite for revising presidential ethics rules, though it remains to be seen whether these texts will even pass congressional debate, let alone become law, given that Republicans and Democrats are fiercely clashing over the conduct of Trump, as well as current President Joseph Biden.
The proposal by James Comer, a Republican representative from Kentucky, and Katie Porter, a Democratic representative from California, focuses on strengthening transparency and requires the disclosure of foreign payments, gifts, and loans to the closest family members of the president and vice president. This is a direct consequence of the concern prevailing among members of Congress over the business dealings of Trump's children, as well as Biden's son.
