(Patria) - At least 53 people were killed and 62 injured after a major earthquake struck China's mountainous Tibet region on Tuesday morning, the BBC reported, citing Chinese state media.
Scenes of destruction and houses collapsed in Tingri, Tibet after today's earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale.
According to media, 53 people have been killed and the number could rise.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced that a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred at 9:05 AM local time, followed by several aftershocks.
Both the USGS and the China Earthquake Networks Center located the epicenter high on the remote Tibetan plateau near the Himalayan border with Nepal.
Some rural houses collapsed in the earthquake, the state news agency Xinhua reported.
The closest major city to the epicenter is the holy city of Shigatse, about 180 kilometers away.
The city is traditionally the seat of the Panchen Lama, the second highest spiritual leader in Tibetan Buddhism, after the Dalai Lama.
The USGS earthquake map showed that the effects of the earthquake could be felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of northern India.
