
(Patria) - A devastating earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale struck Russia's far eastern coast, triggering tsunami warnings in parts of Russia, Japan and the United States.
Several people sustained injuries after the earthquake hit the remote Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia's TASS news agency reported.
One woman was injured after jumping through a window. Other people were also injured while trying to evacuate during the earthquake.
According to Health Minister Oleg Melnikov, all are "in satisfactory condition."
Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido was among the first places where tsunami waves were recorded, along with parts of Russia. The waves measured about 30 to 40 cm.
Officials in Hawaii ordered "immediate evacuation" of large parts of the island of Oahu, including the state capital Honolulu.
- Destructive tsunami waves are expected - stated in warnings on social media by the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management.
According to the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center, Ecuador could be hit by a three-meter tsunami following the earthquake.
U.S. President Donald Trump issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and advisories for Alaska and the Pacific coast of the United States.
This is the strongest earthquake to shake the Earth since 2011, when a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan, killing more than 19,000 people.
