Devastating Russian attack on Kyiv: 21 dead, dozens injured

(Patria) - The death toll from the Russian attack on Kyiv overnight has risen to 21, said the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Timur Tkachenko. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing, and according to current data, at least 63 people have been injured, while it is feared that about a dozen more are still under the rubble.

During the night of August 28, Russian forces carried out a combined attack with missiles and drones, causing a series of explosions in several districts of the capital – Shevchenkivskyi, Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, and Desnianskyi.

The attack also damaged the building of the European Union delegation in Kyiv, prompting an urgent diplomatic response. The EU summoned the Russian envoy in Brussels for talks, and the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that "no diplomatic mission should be targeted in conflicts."

"While the world seeks a path to peace, Russia responds with missiles. The night attack on Kyiv shows a deliberate choice of escalation and a mockery of peace efforts. Russia must stop the killing and negotiate," said Kallas.

The building of the British delegation in Kyiv was also damaged, after which London summoned the Russian ambassador for talks. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, condemned the attack and announced that the EU would soon present the 19th package of sanctions against Russia.

The White House stated that US President Donald Trump "was not surprised" when informed about the attack. "He was not happy about this news, but he was not surprised either. These are two countries that have been at war for a very long time," said spokesperson Caroline Leavitt, announcing that Trump would give a more detailed statement during the day.

Moscow, on the other hand, claims that the targets were exclusively military facilities. Spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said that "damage to civilian infrastructure is a consequence of the actions of Ukrainian air defense and electronic warfare."

The attack on Kyiv once again raised the issue of the security of international missions in Ukraine and deepened tensions between Russia and the West, as residents of the capital tally the consequences of one of the most devastating nights in recent months.
