The Supreme Court of the Federation of BiH has overturned the verdict sentencing Ermin Čurtić to five and a half years in prison for crimes committed in Vareš, and decided that the proceedings against him will be conducted anew before the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo.
The Cantonal Court in Sarajevo on November 7, 2013, convicted Čurtić of participating, as a guide of a part of the special purpose unit “Maturice” of the Croatian Defence Council (HVO), in an attack on Stupni Do and Vareš Majdan, treating civilians inhumanely and looting them.
The proceedings against Čurtić have been ongoing since 1996. In October 2011, he was sentenced to five and a half years in prison, but that verdict was overturned, and after a retrial, the same sentence was imposed in 2013.
Čurtić was in custody for four months in 1996, as well as from October 15, 2009, to May 9, 2012.
