War Crimes: Trial Continues for Beating in Višegrad Police Station

At the trial of Jovan Popović, accused of crimes committed in Višegrad, a witness of the BiH Prosecutor's Office recalled the taking away of her husband from the Rodića Brdo settlement in June 1992.

Witness Fatma Zukić said that her husband Fadil was taken away by two unknown soldiers on June 17, 1992. At the moment of the taking, as she explained, she did not see the accused Popović, whom she knows well, BIRN reported, as carried by the Patria news agency.

She said that she later saw him standing on the road near the houses. She added that she also did not see who took Rešad Mucovski that day.

Popović is charged with being part of a group of soldiers led by Milan Lukić who came to Rodića Brdo in mid-June 1992 and took several civilians to the Višegrad police station, after which they were killed. For crimes committed in Višegrad, the Hague Tribunal sentenced Lukić to life imprisonment.

Witness Zukić recounted that her husband was taken to the police station in Višegrad, where she visited him twice.

- I came down there, saw him, he was all beaten up - she said and added that when she came the third time, she did not see her husband.

Zukić said that his body was found in 2001.

She recounted that Popović asked for her father-in-law. She could not specify whether that was on the same day her husband was taken or a few days later.

The witness stated that Popović entered the house and asked for her father-in-law, who was hiding behind the door. After not finding him, as she said, he left the house and went away.

A new witness for the Prosecution will be examined on October 14.
