Violence rate rising in Sarajevo Canton: Repeat offenders most common perpetrators!

The increased crime rate on the streets of Sarajevo raises questions about the efficiency of the judicial system in Sarajevo Canton, as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The most common participants in incidents, clashes, fights, and murders are individuals already known to the police and repeat offenders, writes the Bosnian news agency Patria.

Sarajevo lawyer Omar Mehmedbašić told the Bosnian news agency Patria that everything depends on how much is done during the investigation.

- The defense works accordingly. Given the conditions the Prosecutor's Office has, it works perfectly. Although there is a large number of acquittals, there is also a large number of convictions – says Mehmedbašić.

The question that arises is also the role of the police, which in some cases can be decisive. We must not forget the work of prosecutors, on whom it often depends whether a case will hold or fall.

Mehmedbašić believes that the crime rate in Sarajevo is still not alarming and considers the situation in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina to be good.

However, statistics show a different reality. As Mirsad Šehović, deputy chief prosecutor of Sarajevo Canton, previously told the media, a stricter penal policy is needed, especially when it comes to repeat offenders.

- We are not for cutting off heads, but if the same people keep appearing, it is obvious that the punishment was lenient - said Šehović.

Citizens' trust in the rule of law and the work of the Prosecutor's Office has been seriously damaged, and there are numerous examples that demonstrate this.

One example is the case of Hava Dovadžija, who died in a traffic accident in Nedžarići on April 1, and charges against driver Semir Masle were filed only seven months after the accident, while he was free all that time.

In another case that occurred a few days ago, BMW driver Nermin Maslo was arrested and is still in custody. At that time, Josipa Knežević died.
