Police said they received multiple reports from citizens who reported gunshots near Vaksala Square in the city center.
The shooting occurred ahead of the Valborg (Walpurgis Night) celebrations, a traditional spring festival that draws large crowds to the streets every year.
According to the police, several people were found with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.
Swedish media report that the perpetrator fled on an electric scooter and a search is underway, with a police helicopter also participating.
A large part of the area has been cordoned off, and an investigation is ongoing. Police spokesperson Magnus Jansson Klarin told local media that they had received multiple reports of gunshots in the area.
