(Patria) - Two members of the American National Guard were shot tonight near the White House, in downtown Washington, confirmed Security Minister Kristi Noem.
Police have arrested one suspect, and the scene has been secured, reports CNN.
The DC Metropolitan Police Department announced on social media platform X that the scene is secure and one suspect has been apprehended. Citizens are advised to avoid the area.
The circumstances leading to the shooting are still unknown, and the National Guard has not yet issued an official statement.
US President Donald Trump has been informed of the incident, confirmed his spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.
"The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed," said Leavitt.
Members of the National Guard from several federal states have been in Washington for months.
Their presence is part of an operation launched by Trump aimed at curbing crime in the capital, which has since been expanded to other American cities.
