First time in 30 years: Spanish bullfighter dies in bullfight

Spanish bullfighter Victor Barrio (29) died on Saturday from the consequences of a bull's horn goring in a bullfight in Teruel, in the central-eastern part of Spain, the organizer announced, reports the news agency Patria.

The arena's medical service confirmed the death of the bullfighter, who was gored on the right side of his chest, the company Tauroemocion announced. According to Spanish media, this is the first death of a bullfighter in thirty years in Spain.

Television footage of the bullfight shows Lorenzo, a bull weighing over 500 kilograms, delivering the fatal horn goring, shaking the bullfighter in the red and gold costume several times forcefully. Then, Barrio's colleagues lead the bull away while the bullfighter lies on the ground, eyes open, but clearly unconscious.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy sent his condolences to the family after the bullfighter's death.

Originally from Grajera, a village in the province of Segovia, this energetic and talented bullfighter began bullfighting in 2008 and toured arenas throughout Spain.

According to Spanish media, the previous death of a bullfighter in Spanish arenas occurred in 1985 when the young 21-year-old Jose Cubero was killed, gored in the heart.

Last year, another famous Spanish bullfighter, Francisco Rivera "Paquirri", was seriously injured after being gored in the groin. His father was killed in similar circumstances in Andalusia in 1984. (Index).
