First patient receives experimental cancer vaccine

(Patria) - An eighty-one-year-old man became the first person to receive an experimental vaccine against incurable skin cancer, developed by Moderna.

He said that the feeling that he could contribute to something that could help many people motivated him to participate in this step forward in medicine.

The injected genetic RNA material, writes the British The Sun, mimics markers found on cancer cells and triggers the body to fight against them.

Dr. David Pinato and his team at Imperial College NHS in London are currently testing whether the vaccine is safe enough for a three-year global trial.

They hope to first be able to treat skin and lung cancer, and then other tumors, such as bowel or breast cancer.
