(Patria) – Turkey has received the first part of the shipment of the Russian S-400 missile system despite the opposition of the United States.
The shipment arrived at an air base in Ankara on Friday, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced.
The US had previously warned that Turkey could not have both the S-400 defense system and American F-35 fighter jets.
Both Turkey and the US are NATO allies, but Turkey also has close relations with Russia.
US military officials have warned that they do not want F-35 aircraft near the S-400 system because they fear Russian experts would gain insight into the F-35's weaknesses, the BBC writes.
Despite the warnings, Turkey has proceeded with the procurement, which will likely increase tensions between the country and the US, or rather the NATO alliance, which cannot tolerate a member country acquiring equipment from Russia.
The US had already previously halted the delivery of aircraft to Turkey, as well as the training of Turkish pilots. There is already talk of the possibility of Turkey being excluded from the program entirely.
