(Patria) - The first shipment of the American security assistance package to Ukraine worth $200 million has arrived in Kyiv, the US Embassy in Kyiv announced on Saturday.
The delivery followed a visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Kyiv this week amid concerns from Kyiv and its Western allies about tens of thousands of Russian soldiers on the border with Ukraine. Russia denies planning a new military offensive.
"The United States will continue to provide such assistance to support the Ukrainian armed forces in their ongoing efforts to defend Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity from Russian aggression," it said on Facebook.
The Ukrainian Minister of Defense thanked the United States for the assistance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a tweet on Friday that he was grateful to US President Joe Biden for the "unprecedented" diplomatic and military aid to date.
Secretary Blinken has been on a diplomatic offensive for days, and announced on Twitter that he had spoken with numerous foreign ministers of NATO member states about Ukraine. Blinken also visited Germany, from where he sent a message that the US and its allies will defend Ukraine from Russian aggression and respond strongly to Russia with sanctions.
The conversation between Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva on Friday ended without an official agreement, and talks will continue.
