Sarajevo police no longer treat car break-ins as criminal offences

Police in Sarajevo Canton no longer classify car break-ins as criminal offences, a source from the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Interior reveals to the Patria agency.

The Criminal Code of the Federation of BiH stipulates that breaking into an enclosed space is a criminal offence, among others, but the Sarajevo police have long ceased to treat car break-ins as criminal offences! Or, the police will only register a break-in as a criminal offence if it involves expensive cars.

- The law does not prescribe whether, after a break-in, something must be taken from the enclosed space. Every break-in into an enclosed space, according to the Criminal Code of the FBiH, is a criminal offence. It is unclear who allowed the Sarajevo police to treat car break-ins so lightly. Finally, who allowed them not to act in accordance with the Law - says this source. He claims that during the night, in the area of just one police station in Sarajevo, ten to fifteen car break-ins occur.

The number of car break-ins in the Sarajevo area is on the rise, but citizens are increasingly less likely to report such cases to the police. The number of cases that the police have managed to solve so far is small. Citizens are therefore losing trust in the police. They often solve the problem of break-ins, as well as car thefts, on their own. Although this exposes them to danger, Patria writes.
