(Patria) – At least one person has lost their life and dozens have been injured in clashes between demonstrators and police that broke out after the presidential elections in Belarus.
In the capital, Minsk, police used tear gas in an attempt to break up the protests, and more than 120 demonstrators were detained.
Thousands of Belarusian citizens took to the streets on Sunday to protest the victory of 'the last European dictator' Alexander Lukashenko in the presidential elections.
After the polling stations closed, a member of the Central Election Commission of Belarus, Lydia Yermoshina, told state television that Lukashenko was leading in five regions with about 82% of the votes cast, while his opposition rival Svetlana Tikhanovskaya received about 7% support.
Tikhanovskaya (37) disagreed with the result – members of her election campaign claim she achieved a significant lead in Minsk.
The result, which many consider rigged, will allow Lukashenko to serve his 6th term and continue his long reign, which has lasted for 26 years.
