Protests: Will animals be bred for fur production in BiH by 2028?

The House of Peoples of the BiH Parliament will decide on the proposal to postpone the ban on fur farming until 2028 at today's session.

Today we will find out if animals will be bred in BiH for fur production by 2028, or if the provision from the Law on Animal Protection and Welfare from 2009 will remain in force, which stipulates that all breeders of animals for fur production should close their farms by next year.

Otherwise, at the request of MP Predrag Kožul, the House of Representatives of the PSBiH on April 20, with the votes of MPs from SDA, HDZ, SDS, and HDZ 1990, accepted amendments to this law under an urgent procedure, postponing the ban for 10 years.

Activists from the group "Coalition without Fur" have announced a protest gathering in front of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina building before the start of the House of Peoples session for today.

Activists believe that this is a disgrace to the country and that the ban on breeding animals for fur should come into effect from 2018.

They announce that citizens will gather in front of the BiH Parliament at 11:00 AM, according to a statement from the group "Coalition without Fur".

We remind you that in neighboring Croatia, a ban on breeding animals for fur production came into effect on January 1st.

From the association "Animal Friends" they emphasized at the time that this was the result of a long, strong, and persistent fight by citizens, experts, institutions, and animal protection associations during a ten-year transitional period in which chinchilla breeders tried to overturn the ban.

Since the ban on breeding animals for fur became part of the Animal Protection Law in 2006, most chinchilla breeders, the only animals bred in Croatia for fur, stopped production, but a smaller portion continued to operate with the aim of overturning the legal ban.

Citizens, veterinarians, politicians, MEPs, public figures, civil society organizations, and institutions strongly opposed the pressure from chinchilla breeders to lift the ban on breeding animals for fur or extend the transitional period for another year.
