Last year broke all records, but this one could be even warmer

(Patria) - Scientists have confirmed that last year was the warmest on record, but this year, 2024, according to relevant data, will be even warmer.

Annual warming will globally, for the first time from pre-industrial times to the present, exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius.

This warming will be caused, primarily, by the continued burning of fossil fuels worldwide, as well as the natural phenomenon of El Niño.

El Niño occurs at intervals of four to five years, and this winter it is further warming the surface of the Pacific Ocean and raising the planet's temperature, according to research by climatologists from the supercomputing center in Barcelona.

This year's warming, according to computer model calculations, is likely to rise by 1.54 degrees Celsius, and this trend could continue throughout the next decade.

The predictions of these scientists indicate that in the next five years, from 2024 to 2028, the average warming will be between 1.49 and 1.79 degrees Celsius.

In the period from 2029 to 2033, annual warming will range from 1.67 to nearly 2 degrees Celsius.

Research team member Roberto Bilbao emphasizes that this rate of temperature increase does not definitively mean that the Paris climate agreement reached in 2015, which discusses slowing down warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, will be breached, as that agreement refers to a 20-year period.

However, everything indicates that the world is dangerously approaching the indicated critical limit.

If, however, global warming exceeding the agreed strategy in Paris occurs, scientists predict that coral reefs will die out worldwide and these ecosystems will be destroyed.

Scientists believe that this will be followed by the melting of ice in Antarctica, leading to a rise in sea and ocean levels, as well as serious consequences in the agricultural sector in some parts of the world.

Such warming can lead to a chain reaction of negative biological and climatic changes on the planet that will be irreversible.
