(Patria) - Almost 150,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the war in February 2022, according to estimates by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs released yesterday.
- Russia's military failure is already here. We estimate Russian military losses at 500,000, of which 150,000 are dead - said French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné in an interview published yesterday in the European edition of the Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta.
All this for what? It can be summarized in a few words - for nothing, Séjourné stated.
His estimate is considerably lower than that of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said in February that 180,000 enemy soldiers had been killed in Ukraine.
At the end of April, Great Britain estimated that around 450,000 Russians had been killed or wounded in Ukraine.
Moscow has not released any information on the number of killed and wounded in the ranks of its armed forces since September 2022, when it was announced that almost 6,000 soldiers had been killed.
On the Ukrainian side, President Zelensky said at the end of February that 31,000 soldiers had been killed.
- Not 300,000, nor 150,000, as Putin and his lying circle say. But each of those losses is a great loss for us - Zelensky said at the time.
According to many Western security sources, Ukrainian military losses are greatly underestimated.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu estimated Ukrainian losses at 444,000 at the same time, without specifying whether he was referring only to the dead or also to the wounded. On Friday, he estimated Ukrainian losses since the beginning of the year at 111,000, again without providing details.
