Ceasefire in Gaza takes effect, agreement reached in Egypt

(Patria) - Israel and Hamas have agreed on the first phase of US President Donald Trump's plan for Gaza, a ceasefire and hostage deal that could pave the way for ending the bloody two-year war in the Middle East.

Just a day after the second anniversary of the Hamas militant attack that triggered the devastating Israeli offensive on Gaza, indirect talks in Egypt resulted in an agreement on the initial phase of Trump's 20-point framework for establishing peace in the Palestinian enclave.

According to sources, the agreement could be signed in Egypt as early as today.

World officials, families of hostages, and displaced Palestinians welcomed the deal, but all details have yet to be released.

In Egypt, delegates celebrated with hugs, while in Gaza and Israel, people took to the streets in celebration.

US President Donald Trump could visit the Middle East in the coming days, and possibly Gaza.

More than 67,000 people, including a large number of children, have been killed in Gaza over the two years.

Trump announced on Wednesday that all sides had agreed to the deal, whose first phase would include the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners by Israel. Trump said the release of hostages by Hamas would likely take place on Monday.
