Gaza Ceasefire Welcomed by Guterres and Biden, Hostages Released

(Patria) - In a post on the X platform, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the start of the ceasefire in Gaza and the release of prisoners.

He said that the world body is ready to support the implementation and increase the delivery of constant humanitarian aid to "the countless Palestinians who continue to suffer".

President Joe Biden also made a statement on his last day in office. In a TV address, he welcomed the ceasefire agreement, saying that "weapons in Gaza have fallen silent today".

"These are some of the hardest negotiations I have been involved in... but today we have reached this point because of the pressure of Israel on Hamas, which is supported by the USA," he said.

"The region has now been fundamentally transformed," Biden continued, citing the weakening of Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

He added that hundreds of trucks are entering Gaza to help its civilian population.

The Red Cross told the Israeli government that three hostages released by Hamas on Sunday are in good condition, an Israeli official told CNN.

"The condition of the three hostages is good after an initial medical examination," the official said.

Israel is expected to release 90 Palestinian prisoners.
