(Patria) - US President Donald Trump stated that the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will be extended for three weeks following new talks between envoys of the two countries in Washington, reported the BBC.
Announcing this extension on the social network Truth Social, the US President said the meeting "went very well", adding that the United States will cooperate with Lebanon "to help it protect itself from Hezbollah".
The ceasefire, announced after a meeting in Washington last week, was due to expire on Sunday.
The goal is to end more than seven weeks of fighting between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah.
In the Oval Office, Trump said that both Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit the White House "in the coming weeks".
"They have Hezbollah to think about," he said.
"We will cooperate with Lebanon to resolve things in that country. I think it would be wonderful if this were resolved at the same time as what we are doing in Iran."
Speaking in the Oval Office with Trump, Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad and Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter praised Trump for his role in the negotiations.
Leiter said that Israel and Lebanon are united in their goal of Lebanon ridding itself of "this malevolent influence called Hezbollah".
