Exactly eight years ago, the most wanted war criminal Radovan Karadžić, who used the false name Dragan Dabić, was arrested in Serbia. He had been on the run for 13 years after the Hague Tribunal issued a warrant, living peacefully and freely in countries of the region. He even had his own practice. He gained a reputation as a successful neuropsychiatrist and bioenergeticist, writes the Bosnian news agency Patria.
His appearance changed drastically; he had a long gray beard and gray hair.
Under strong pressure from the international community, Boris Tadić, then President of Serbia, had to give approval for Karadžić to be arrested.
According to information, American intelligence agents discovered Karadžić and tracked his every move. The arrest operation began on Monday around 9 PM.
Nothing was left to chance, so the arrest operation of Radovan Karadžić was brief. When agents approached him and informed him he was under arrest, he offered no resistance and did not utter a word. Handcuffs were placed on him in an apartment in the center of Belgrade, in the Vračar municipality.
His trial began on October 26, 2009, and concluded in October 2014. The first-instance verdict against Karadžić was pronounced on March 24, 2016, sentencing him to 40 years in prison.
The accused is guilty of the siege, terrorization, murders, and crimes in Sarajevo. He is guilty of extermination, murder as a crime against humanity, murder as a violation of the laws or customs of war, deportation, inhumane acts, forcible transfer, spreading terror, unlawful attacks on civilians, and taking hostages as a violation of the laws or customs of war. He is guilty of genocide in Srebrenica.
