On this day in 1992, Želimir Vidović Keli, one of FK Sarajevo's most notable players, a player whose moves drew fans to matches, was killed, reports the BH News Agency Patria.
Keli owned a cafe at the foot of his house on Lukavička Road, and on one of the March days in 1992, he kicked out a group of Chetniks when they went too far in their revelry, which was the reason he soon left his cafe and house.
Shortly after, his house became a sniper's nest, which was later eliminated with great effort. When the fighting began, Vidović, like most true athletes, stood up to defend his homeland. Stories were told of situations where Vidović, as a volunteer with great courage, helped the wounded, and that, although many asked him not to do so due to his earlier conflict with the Chetniks, Vidović remained true to his decision. On one occasion, while transferring the wounded from occupied Dobrinja to Koševo hospital, the ambulance driven by Keli was stopped at a checkpoint, and all trace of him was lost from that day on.
His remains were found at Stup. Keli was buried on June 4, 2004, at Bare cemetery.
Želimir Vidović - Keli parted ways with his Sarajevo and Koševo, but he became a true legend who should be remembered by all generations, not only by FK Sarajevo fans, but also by all true patriots and those who feel this city and country as their place and homeland.
Today, the street where Keli had his house is named Želimira Vidovića Kelija.
