Dayton Peace Agreement initialed 23 years ago

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The Dayton Peace Agreement was initialed on this day, November 21, 1995, in Dayton, and signed three weeks later. The agreement established two entities – the Federation of BiH and RS.

Although it was supposed to be a temporary solution, the Dayton Peace Agreement is still a matter of many discussions today, with some calling it the "straitjacket of BiH".

Three weeks after being initialed, the Dayton Peace Agreement was signed on December 14, 1995, ending the aggression against BiH.

- This is not a just peace, but it is more just than the continuation of war. In this situation as it is, and in a world as it is, a better peace could not have been achieved - said the then-President of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović, after the signing ceremony of the Dayton Peace Agreement on December 14, 1995, at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

The peace agreement was signed by the then-presidents of BiH Alija Izetbegović, Croatia Franjo Tuđman, and Serbia Slobodan Milošević. Today, none of the three are alive anymore.
