(Patria) - Although it seemed that the Russian influence campaign on the referendum on Moldova's entry into the European Union would succeed, there has been a turnaround and Moldovans have chosen a European future.
In the non-binding referendum, people voted on whether to change the constitution and commit to joining the EU. The result is extremely close, but the pro-European camp is still leading by 744 votes. The difference is expected to increase in favor of the "yes" option, as only votes from abroad, which are largely pro-European, remain to be counted.
This morning, at one point, the difference was an incredible 79 votes in favor of the pro-European option out of about one and a half million votes in the referendum.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu condemned last night an "unprecedented attack on democracy" when about 90 percent of the votes had been counted and it seemed that the answer "no" had won quite convincingly in the referendum related to joining the EU as a strategic goal of the country.
