Shooting in the US: Right-wing activist and Trump ally wounded, attacker arrested

(Patria) - Charlie Kirk, an influential right-wing activist close to US President Donald Trump and executive director of the organization Turning Point USA (TPUSA), was wounded today during an event at Utah Valley University. Footage circulating on social media shows

Although the University previously announced that a person connected to the attack on Kirk was in custody, CNN writes that a police official told them that no one has been detained for the attack yet.

Utah Valley University spokesperson Scott Trotter, who also previously stated in an announcement that no one was yet detained, has now released the latest information according to which the person who was apprehended and detained has since been released.

According to the latest information, Kirk's wife and their two children were with him on the university campus.



Videos of the event circulating on social media show Charlie Kirk sitting under a white tent and addressing the gathered crowd.

The words "The American Comeback Tour" were written on the tent, which is the name of his current lecture tour.

In one video, one of the viewers can be heard asking Kirk about mass shootings in America: "Do you know how many mass shootings there have been in America in the last 10 years?"

Holding the microphone, Kirk replied: "Does gang violence count or not?"

After that, a gunshot is heard, and Kirk flinched and immediately slumped over, with blood flowing from his neck, the BBC reports.

Charlie Kirk and his political organization Turning Point USA were key to Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 presidential race. Trump credited Kirk with inspiring and mobilizing young voters.

Kirk maintained close ties with the president and his family during Trump's first term, and appeared in the Oval Office in May, attending the swearing-in ceremony of Judge Jeanine Pirro.



"I won young people with 37 percent. No Republican has ever won, and I won with 37 percent. And Charlie Kirk will tell you, TikTok helped, but Charlie Kirk also helped," Trump said.

In a statement from Utah Valley University sent to American media, including The New York Times and Fox News, it is stated that shots were fired at Kirk from a building about 200 yards (182 meters) away.

"Around 12:20 PM, shots were fired from a building approximately 200 yards from the speaker. To our knowledge, the person was hit and immediately taken by his security," the statement from University spokesperson Ellen Trean reads.

Police told students to leave the campus immediately.

"The campus is closed, classes are canceled until further notice. Police are conducting an investigation. Leave the campus immediately. Follow police instructions," the announcement stated.
