(Patria) - Pope Francis passed away this morning, announced Vatican chamberlain Cardinal Kevin Ferrell.
- This morning at 7:35 AM, Roman Bishop Francis returned to the Father's house. His entire life was dedicated to serving the Lord and His Church - said Farel (Farrell) in the announcement.
The Pope's secular name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He was born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina.
Pope Francis was the first Jesuit and the first Latin American, as well as the first member of a religious order since Gregory XVI (1831–1846) and the first non-European since Gregory III (731–741) in this position.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was the son of Italian immigrants to Argentina. After finishing high school studies to become a chemical technician, he briefly worked in the food processing industry, but felt a calling to the church, writes Encyclopedia Britannica.
When he was about 21 years old, he suffered severe pneumonia which led to the removal of part of his right lung. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1958, and then dedicated himself to academic advancement, studying humanities in Santiago, Chile, and earned a licentiate (equivalent to a master's degree) in philosophy in the province of Buenos Aires.
In recent years, he has had health problems.
