Oscar winner Alan Arkin has died

(Patria) - American actor Alan Arkin has died at the age of 89.

His sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony confirmed their father's death in a statement to People magazine.

"Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and as a man.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed," they stated.

Arkin began his acting career on Broadway in the early 1960s, starring in plays such as 1963's Enter Laughing, for which he won the prestigious Tony Award.

He performed in dozens of other plays and developed a successful career on the big screen as well.

In the 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine, he played Edwin Hoover, the grandfather in a dysfunctional family.

He had only 14 minutes of screen time, but it was enough for a nomination, and later an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor.

He also starred in the 2012 political drama Argo, directed by Ben Affleck.

In his rich career, he won numerous awards besides the Oscar, including two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe, and a Tony, reports Index.
