(Patria) - Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu died today at the age of 95, the government announced.
Iliescu was long hailed as the father of the Romanian nation, but was later accused of being responsible for the chaotic transition of the Eastern European country from communism to democracy.
Iliescu was the first and third president of Romania, between 1990 and 1996 and from 2000 to 2004.
"With deep regret, the government announces the death of former Romanian President Ion Iliescu," the statement said.
The government specified that details regarding the organization of the state funeral will be announced in the coming days.
