Former Israeli Prime Minister and President Shimon Peres passed away at the age of 93 in a Tel Aviv hospital, two weeks after suffering a stroke, Israeli radio reported, as stated by the Patria News Agency.
He was born Shimon Persky in Vishneva, then in Poland, and today in Belarus, later adopting the surname Peres, which means eagle in Hebrew. Peres served as the President of Israel from 2007 to 2014, and before that, he served as the Prime Minister of Israel twice.
In 1994, together with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and then-Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for successful negotiations in Stockholm. After the end of his presidential term, he founded and led the Peres Center for Peace, writes Index.
