Danish Prime Minister: Trump Has Not Given Up on Greenland

(Patria) - Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says US President Donald Trump's ambition to take over Greenland has not disappeared.

Trump has long wanted control over Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, claiming it is necessary for protecting US national security.

He recently threatened tariffs on European countries that oppose this, but later withdrew the threats and ruled out a military takeover of the world's largest island.

However, Frederiksen warns the crisis is not over.

- I think the US president's desire is the same. He is very serious about this issue - Frederiksen said at the Munich Security Conference.

The panel moderator asked her if there is any price for which Denmark would sell Greenland to Trump.

- Of course not. Can you put a price on a part of Spain? Or a part of the United States?

We must protect sovereign states. We must protect the right of peoples to self-determination. And the Greenlanders have been absolutely clear: they do not want to become Americans - Frederiksen replied.

Since Trump abandoned tariffs and the military option, the US, Denmark and Greenland have been holding closed-door talks about the island's future.

Such talks also took place in Munich, where Frederiksen and Greenlandic Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen met on the sidelines of the conference two days ago with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
