The United States will not get Greenland, Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on Sunday in a Facebook post in response to Donald Trump's statements that he wants to take control of the vast Arctic island, Reuters reported.
"President Trump says the United States is getting Greenland. To be clear: The United States will not get it. We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future," Nielsen said in a social media post.
Trump told NBC News on Saturday that he had had "absolutely" real discussions about annexing the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
"We will get Greenland. Yes, one hundred percent," Trump said, according to NBC.
During a visit to a US military base in northern Greenland on Friday, US Vice President JD Vance accused Denmark of not doing a good job of protecting the island and suggested that the United States would better protect the strategically located island.
