Armenian Prime Minister Proposes Non-Aggression Pact to Azerbaijan

(Patria) - Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Sunday he proposed signing a non-aggression pact with Azerbaijan, pending a comprehensive peace agreement between the Caucasian neighbours, AFP reported.

Yerevan and Baku fought two wars, in 2020 and the 1990s, over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which Azerbaijan recaptured in a lightning offensive last year.

"We presented Azerbaijan with a proposal for a mutual arms control mechanism and the signing of a non-aggression pact if the signing of the peace agreement is delayed," Pashinyan said in a speech during the celebration of Armenian Army Day.

Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev previously said a peace agreement could be signed by the end of last year. But internationally mediated peace talks have so far failed to produce a breakthrough.
