Ugandan President Secures Fifth Decade of Rule

(Patria) - Yoweri Museveni overwhelmingly won the presidential elections held yesterday in Uganda.

This veteran politician thus enters his fifth decade of rule after an electoral process marked by violent incidents and accusations of fraud.

Museveni won 71.65 percent of the vote, the Ugandan Electoral Commission announced yesterday.

The opponent of the 81-year-old leader – who won his seventh term with this victory – was Bobi Wine, a pop musician who won 24 percent of the vote.

Wine claims the elections were marred by fraud and were held during an internet access blockade to "prevent the spread of disinformation." He called on his supporters to take to the streets.

It was not known yesterday where the 43-year-old musician was, and he announced that he had escaped a military raid on his home.

"Last night was very difficult at our home. The army and police searched us. They cut off our electricity and disabled our CCTV cameras," Wine wrote on the X platform, adding that his wife and family members are under house arrest.

The victory of Museveni, the current Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement, is not surprising.

Since taking power in 1986 as a rebel leader, he has twice changed the constitution to abolish the maximum age for the position and term limits.

During his long rule, he has established complete control over the institutions of the African country of 50 million inhabitants.
