Mexican President criticizes US military aid to Ukraine and demands money for Latin America

(Patria) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has criticized US military aid to Ukraine, suggesting it is "irrational" and has intensified criticism of the war effort, calling on Washington to dedicate more funds to aid Latin American countries, Reuters reported.

Lopez Obrador has long urged the United States to provide more funds for economic development in Central America and the Caribbean to alleviate migration pressures.

During his regular daily press conference, Lopez Obrador criticized the US Congress for not allocating money for the region, before referring to last week's disputes over a temporary funding bill that denied further aid to Ukraine.

"I was just watching how they are not approving aid for the war in Ukraine now," he said.

"But how much have they allocated for the war in Ukraine? 30 to 50 billion dollars for war. Which is the most irrational thing you can have. And harmful."

"So, they have to modify their strategy and learn to respect. It is not the time to ignore the Mexican authorities," added Lopez Obrador.

The leftist Lopez Obrador has sought for Mexico to maintain neutrality in the war and has criticized Western military aid to Kyiv. He has also proposed peace talks to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Two weeks ago, the president defended the presence of a Russian military unit at a parade marking Mexico's Independence Day, after sharp criticism that his country had given a platform to forces that attacked Ukraine. However, his government has supported some major UN resolutions criticizing Russia's role in the conflict.
