President of Latvia calls on European countries to introduce military conscription

(Patria) - Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs has called on European countries to "absolutely introduce military conscription", acknowledging that the continent is militarily rather weak.

Speaking to Sky News, Rinkēvičs said that European countries should increase defence spending, especially in the context of unstable relations with the US.

In 2023, Latvia reintroduced mandatory military service for men and increased its military budget to 4% of GDP.

- Looking at what is happening in the world, I think many other European countries should follow our example - Rinkēvičs stated.

He added that many people are concerned about global developments, but that a stronger security policy from European governments is key.

- People follow the news and, of course, strong guarantees are important. But it is even more important that European governments ensure we all strengthen ourselves - Rinkēvičs said.
