(Patria) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated yesterday that North America, including the US, could be renamed "Mexican America" - a historical name used on early maps of the region - in response to Donald Trump's announcement that he would rename the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America".
"Mexican America, that sounds pretty," Sheinbaum said, pointing to a 1607 map that depicts North America under that name.
Wowww ‼️ Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responds to Trump on his proposal to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico — and points to a 17th century map of greater México.
“We are going to call it América Mexicana. It sounds pretty, no?”

Sheinbaum, who has been sparring with Trump in recent weeks, used a press conference to discuss history, with the help of old maps and former culture minister Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real.
"The fact is that Mexican America has been recognized since the 17th century as the name for the entire northern part of the American continent," Suarez del Real said, pointing to the area on the map.
Regarding the Gulf of Mexico, he stated that the name is internationally recognized and has been used as a maritime navigation reference for hundreds of years.
Trump spoke about renaming the gulf, which stretches from Florida to Mexico's Cancun, two days ago at a press conference, during which he presented a broad expansionist agenda, including the possibility of taking control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.
