(Patria) - Newly elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson said he expects to advance a bill to fund exclusively Israel this week, although President Joe Biden advocates for a $106 billion aid package for Israel and Ukraine together, Reuters reported.
"We are going to advance a standalone bill to fund Israel this week in the House of Representatives," Johnson said in an interview with Fox News, adding that he believes the measure will receive bipartisan support and that Republicans will support a similar measure in the Senate.
Members of the US House of Representatives, which Republicans control by a narrow majority, are expected to return from recess on Wednesday.
"There are many things happening around the world that we need to address and will address," Johnson said, without explicitly mentioning the Ukrainian conflict.
"But right now, what is happening in Israel immediately captures attention, and we need to separate that and get it through," he added.
Biden has called on Congress to approve an additional $106 billion in appropriations, with most of the money directed towards strengthening Ukraine's defense, and the rest divided between Israel, the Indo-Pacific region, and combating immigration at the US-Mexico border.
Johnson said strengthening support for Israel should be at the top of the US national security agenda.
