(Patria) – One of the largest migrant camps, Vial on the Greek island of Chios, was set on fire after several days of protests and clashes among migrants.
In the clashes that began on April 18, three migrants suspected of starting the fire were arrested.
Two vehicles, a canteen, tents, and accommodation containers were set ablaze, reports Euronews.
The Vial camp, designed to accommodate 1,000 people, currently houses around 5,000.
The fire is suspected to have been started as a protest after it was announced that a woman from Iraq, suspected of being infected with the coronavirus, had died, although she tested negative on April 16 under hospital conditions.
Last week, the Greek government began transporting children and elderly individuals with families to other European countries to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in overcrowded camps.
There are currently around 100,000 migrants in Greece.
