Death toll rises in Sydney terror attack, number of injured also increasing, condemnations pour in from around the world

(Patria) - New South Wales Police have confirmed that 12 people were killed in a shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, including one attacker. Another attacker is in critical condition.

The number of injured has also increased from initial police reports to 29 who were wounded or injured during the attack.

An event marking the first day of the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah was being held at Bondi Beach. The attack has been officially declared a terrorist incident.

Mike Burgess, Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), said the agency is verifying the identities of the attackers and whether there is "someone in the community with a similar intent".

"It is important to emphasize at this moment that we have no indication of that fact, but it is something we are actively investigating," he noted.

Speaking about the attackers, he said: "One person was known to us, but not in the perspective of an immediate threat. So, obviously, we have to investigate what happened."
