Confirmed by Croatian Border Police: You don't need a power of attorney if you go to the seaside in a borrowed vehicle

If you are traveling to Croatia in a vehicle you borrowed from a friend or relative, BIHAMK will advise you to get a power of attorney. It costs 25 KM at BIHAMK branches.

The BiH Border Police say that you do not need a power of attorney. It is important that you have valid regular documents, a vehicle registration certificate, and a green card. 

Several readers of the Patria news agency complained that BIHAMK advised them that they needed a power of attorney if they were traveling to Croatia in a borrowed vehicle. BIHAMK confirmed to Patria that they advise drivers to have a power of attorney. They claim this is the only way they can prove the vehicle has not been stolen.

These permits are most often issued during the summer season, when tourists from BiH travel to the sea. 

The BiH Border Police told Patria that they are aware of the discrepancies. Drivers often show powers of attorney to border police officers, but this document is not necessary for them.

It has also been confirmed by the Croatian Border Police that drivers who borrow a vehicle do not need a power of attorney to drive the vehicle in Croatia. 

- According to regulations concerning state border control and road traffic safety in the Republic of Croatia, there is no obligation to possess a power of attorney for driving someone else's vehicle. However, we note that the above applies to tourist and similar short-term visits, the Croatian Border Police told Patria.
