(Patria) - The Federal Court of Appeals in Argentina yesterday confirmed the convicting sentence for former president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
Kirchner, who served two presidential terms between 2007 and 2015, and was vice president from 2019 to 2023, was found guilty of "maladministration" and sentenced to six years in prison in December 2022.
The case can still be appealed to the Supreme Court.
Kirchner, a powerful figure in Argentina, faced charges of alleged corruption in the awarding of public works during her presidential term.
She survived an assassination attempt in 2022, which triggered mass demonstrations by her supporters expressing their support.
Kirchner was nominated to lead the Peronist opposition Justicialist Party after former president Alberto Fernandez was accused of allegedly abusing the former first lady earlier this year and removed from party duties. She will take office on November 17.
Argentina faces parliamentary elections in 2025, but a bill being debated in Congress that prohibits officeholders convicted of corruption could complicate Kirchner's political future.
