(Patria) - Puerto Ricans were left without electricity on the last day of 2024 after a grid failure affected almost the entire island.
About 90 percent of consumers were without electricity yesterday morning local time, according to the portal of the energy distribution company LUMA Energy.
It will likely take 24 to 48 hours for the lights to come back on "if conditions permit. Although we are investigating the cause of the failure, preliminary findings indicate a failure on an underground line," LUMA said.
Governor of Puerto Rico Pedro Pierluisi said in a social media post that his administration "demands answers and solutions" from the power companies.
He added that they "need to speed up the re-engagement of generation units and inform people about the measures they are taking to restore service to the entire island.
Puerto Rico has long struggled with chronic power shortages as its infrastructure crumbles.
