(Patria) - Members of the Serbian Government laid a wreath today at the site where former Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić was assassinated 20 years ago today.
The government delegation was led by Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić, who laid a wreath that read "To Dr. Zoran Đinđić, the Government of the Republic of Serbia," after which the other members of the Government bowed slightly.
Đinđić was the first Prime Minister of Serbia after the fall of Slobodan Milošević's regime in 2000. During his term, the process of democratization of Serbian society and radical economic and social reforms was initiated.
Zoran Đinđić's government strongly advocated for cooperation with the Hague Tribunal for War Crimes, and during that government, several indictees were arrested and extradited to that court, including the former president of Serbia and FR Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milošević.
Đinđić was assassinated on March 12, 2003, in the courtyard of the Serbian Government building, and Zvezdan Jovanović, an officer of the Special Operations Unit (JSO) of the State Security Service, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his murder.
Milorad Ulemek – Legija, commander of the JSO, was also sentenced to the same penalty for organizing the assassination.
The political background of Zoran Đinđić's assassination has never been revealed.
