Poland investigating cyber attack on railway network

(Patria) - Polish intelligence services are investigating a hacker attack on the country's railways, Polish media report, citing the BBC.

Hackers infiltrated railway frequencies to disrupt traffic in the northwest of the country during the night, the Polish Press Agency (PAP) reported on Saturday.

The signals were interspersed with a recording of the Russian anthem and a speech by President Vladimir Putin, the report stated.

Poland is a major transit hub for Western weapons being sent to Ukraine.

Saturday's incident occurred when hackers broadcast a signal that triggered an emergency stop of trains near the city of Szczecin, PAP reported.

Around 20 trains were stopped, but traffic was restored within a few hours. Stanislaw Zaryn, a senior security official, said the Polish Internal Security Agency ABW is investigating. "We are not ruling anything out at the moment," he told PAP.

"We know that there have been attempts for several months to destabilize the Polish state," Zaryn added. "Such attempts have been undertaken by the Russian Federation in cooperation with Belarus," he added. Numerous Western countries have called for increased cybersecurity measures as the conflict in Ukraine continues. Some experts say Russia is carrying out cyberattacks in Ukraine in an apparent attempt to test its hacking tools. Russia has previously called such accusations "Russophobic".
